Outside, Or Inside? That Is The Question
The Seasonal Product Dilemma
It’s a recurring problem; how do you shoot seasonal products and garments six months or more ahead of time in the lifestyle setting they are designed for?
One answer of course is to shoot on location, finding an appropriate climate or setting that compliments the look and feel of your designs. But there is another way.
You can bring the outside, in! We build a location, a realistic setting, inside our room set studio.
The benefit of shooting a location shoot indoors? It’s all about having control. Designing your set, your ideal location, exactly as you want it. From the building style and chosen materials, to the paint colour and finishing touches.
The biggest advantage, it doesn't matter what the weather has in store outside. We can create the weather you want inside!
Go Big Or Start Small
Mid June, a Summer breeze is blowing outside the room set studio. Indoors, our Set Build team can be found putting finishing touches to a log cabin, in the middle of a pine forest, ankle deep in snow. Rewind back a few short weeks and you would have found a 12 meter wooden pier, complete with pebble beach and 3 full sized beach huts.
Grand sets and outdoor locations, often associated with TV and film productions, designed and built by our talented Prodoto team, right here in our West Yorkshire studio.
However, you don't always have to go big, small cameo sets can be equally effective. You can choose to enhance a lifestyle scene with a suggestion of an outdoor setting, or go further and introduce CGI to complete the illusion of a larger outdoor location.
Home Comforts, On Location
One of the many benefits of a studio setting means that we can host our clients, adult and child models and relevant stylists with ease. Hospitality and studio facilities on hand, making sure everyone is comfortable and well attended.
A controllable environment enables focus on other creative areas, thinking space to concentrate on what is required from models, photography and post production. The studio location providing breathing space, something that you can’t always get from a busy distracting location shoot.
Being able to make selections and suggestions on set, as the shoot happens, viewing images as they appear on the large desktop monitor means we can review and direct the shoot with ease.
Post production are available to review the captured images, talk through the CGI options and allow for any tweaks to be made as needed.
Take a closer look at recent studio-location projects from behind the scenes, to help illustrate how an ‘outside-in’ shoot comes together.
Post Production Brings It All Together
The final part in the process, bringing the look and feel of the location-studio shoot to life. Creative retouching comes to the fore making the real magic happen.
Generating the illusion of an outside location, introducing background details and applying grading which gives atmosphere and natural light effects.
The transformation from studio photography through to the final location imagery is magical and never fails to produce a ‘wow’ moment for our clients.
Not Only About The Weather
Some products are destined for use in locations that are not necessarily easily available for a photoshoot.
What if your new range is Hi-Viz for use on airport runways? Or new road construction?
Inhospitable or dangerous locations can be created off camera by shooting your models in the studio using appropriate props and poses, then adding into environments in post production.
Products Go Outside Too
Product shoots have just the same potential for creative wizardry. Your shoot doesn't have to feature people to make it tricky to shoot outdoors.
Beach scenes for example are both weather dependent and also time restrictive. Setting up a full product shoot between the tides could prove problematic.
Check out the images below, spot the difference between the image on the left and the one on the right. It's not just the background that has been added!
Perhaps you can't decide which style location you prefer. This way, you can look at multiple options!
And if a trip to the Arizona desert is a bit out of budget, we can bring the desert to you.
Multipurpose Imagery
The applications available for the final imagery from ‘outside-in’ shoots make it such an interesting and versatile option for marketing.
The images can be used across a varied number of mediums; website banners, magazine editorials, newsletters, billboards, retail point of sale and social media campaigns.
The visual return on investment is bountiful; producing image assets that bolster and add real value to your visual marketing portfolio. So why not talk to our creative team and see what options there are for your products to be shot - Outside, In.
